The region
Did you know that the Creuse is one of the most thinly populated of the 89 French departments? According to the statistics there are only 22 inhabitants to the square kilometre compared with 250 per sq.km in the U.K! To the French the Creuse is affectionately known as La France Profonde; in other words the original unspoilt part of France. Together with Haute Vienne and Correze La Creuse makes up the region of Limousin.
Since 2006 Valliere has been within the National Park of Millevaches. Creuse borders the mountainous area of the Massif Central which rises at its highest point to 930 metres. One of the greatest natural attractions in the locality is the splendid Lake Vassiviere.
There is no mass tourism in la Creuse but an unspoilt countryside perfectly adapted to the needs of anyone seeking a peaceful friendly environment, and all the surroundings contribute to that feeling. Its landscape of rolling hills, pierced by streams and rivers with paths and tracks bordered by oaks, chestnuts and wild fruit bushes is uniquely attractive to walkers and cyclists alike. Creuse is not for nothing called the land of a thousand and one lakes. The meadow lands are studded with the brown and white colours of the famous Limousin and Charollais cattle.
This is the place for you if you want to enjoy peace and space combined with outstanding natural beauty.
